The downside: you sometimes go without things you actually need because you can't find the version that meets your standards. Three pairs of socks would have been fine. The hand-knit Japanese ones were not necessary.
The Editor is the quiet authority. Your home is small but considered. Your closet is small and considered. Your refrigerator is, somehow, also considered. You believe in fewer things, chosen better, and you have the receipts (in a folder, sorted by year). People mistake your restraint for asceticism. It isn't. You simply refuse to live with anything mediocre. The romance is in the editing.
